5/31/2023 0 Comments Afterglow by Eileen Myles![]() ![]() Moving from an imaginary talk show where Rosie is interviewed by Myles's childhood puppet, to a critical reenactment of the night Rosie mated with another pit bull from shimmering poetic transcriptions of video footage taken during their walks, to Rosie's final enlightened narration from the afterlife, this totally singular text combines elements of science fiction, screenplay, monologue, and lucid memory to get to the heart of how and why we dedicate our existence to our dogs. At the same time, it reimagines Myles's experiences with alcoholism and recovery, intimacy and mourning, celebrity and politics, spirituality and family history, while joyously transcending the parameters of memoir. And starting from the emptiness following Rosie's death, Afterglow launches a playful and incisive investigation into the mostly mutually beneficial, sometimes reprehensible power dynamics between pet and pet-owner. Together they recount their relationship. Over the course of sixteen years together, Myles was devoted to the pit bull and their linked quality of life. The poet Eileen Myles has reshaped knowing into collaborative becoming in Afterglow, written in part from the perspective of Myles’s Pit Bull, Rosie. In 1990, Myles chose Rosie from a litter on the street, and their connection instantly made an indelible impact on the writer's way of being. ![]() 5/31/2023 0 Comments The darling strumpet![]() Charles was not one to let his marriage interfere with a quick tryst, and he took on Nell as one of his lovers, ultimately rewarding her with titles and wealth.Ī storyline like that has a natural momentum, and Bagwell takes full advantage of it, skillfully injecting the necessary exposition along the way. Born into poverty, she escaped the rough life of her mother’s tavern and joined her sister in prostitution before rising to fame as a stage actress, from where she caught the eye of various nobles, including, ultimately, the King of England himself, Charles II. For those of us (ahem) who might be a little foggy in the Restoration courtesan department, Gwynne is a real historical figure whose life reads like a variation on Cinderella. ![]() ![]() ![]() This hasn’t stopped Gillian Bagwell from taking Nell Gwynne as the subject of her debut novel, The Darling Strumpet. Add to this the near-absolute ignorance of many readers about prior historical eras, thus necessitating a fair bit of exposition, and the task becomes daunting, indeed. Finding the right balance of period detail while still creating memorable characters and maintaining forward momentum is a lot to pile onto any writer’s plate. ![]() |
